![]() I'm not sure if you were playing games back then, but 8 years was a huge amount of time for video games in the 80s/90s. But if you compare Gradius to Batsugun, you're looking at games that were 8 years apart. Take a look at other shmups from 1983-1985, and I think you'll see how outstanding Gradius was for its time. It's natural that the later game will offer a more polished experience.Įven if you don't enjoy playing Gradius, you can still find appreciation for what it accomplished in 1985. If I can make an analogy - comparing Gradius with Batsugun is sort of like comparing Super Mario Bros. When comparing a game from the 80s with a game from the 90s, the game from the 90s will almost always be faster and more exciting. But maybe I missed something about Gradius and I'm just harsh ? So I get that Gradius is old, and I would like to test Gradius V as well, but is it really a good idea if I dislike the first ones ? Because right now, Gradius I and II are probably the worst SHMUPs I played imo, and Gradius V is expensive. It keeps the fight intense even if you lose a life. You respawn at the middle of a level power-up-less, and you will struggle a lot more than if you just start again.īatsugun, on the other hand, makes your ship level up, and you keep that level when you die or Continue. The game seemed slow, and aged pretty badly in my opinion.īut the worst thing is the fact you lose every power up when you die. I tested Gradius I and II, while specially focusing on Gradius II, but didn't find them to be fun at all. It was, to me, everything Gradius didn't have. Two hours ago I tested Batsugun for the first time, and loved it. I since played maybe 10 to 15 games, without ever trying to get a 1CC or anything.
